Victoria Loan FAQ

Fifteen answers for borrowers across Greater Victoria, grouped by cost, applying, credit and repaying, each one pointing at the page that goes deeper. A payday loan of $100 to $1500 costs at most $14 per $100 and comes out in one payment on your next payday; an installment loan of $500 to $10000 runs 18% to 35% APR over 3 to 60 months.

Cost and BC rules

What does a payday loan cost in Victoria?

$14 per $100 is the legal ceiling everywhere in BC. A $300 loan costs $42, so $342 comes out on your next payday, and $500 costs $70. The payday loans Victoria page prices every amount up to $1500.

Why was my offer smaller than I asked for?

BC caps a payday advance at 50% of the net pay the lender sees for your pay period. A $1900 biweekly deposit from a ministry or hospital job allows at most $950, which is why most first loans land between $100 and $500. The how it works page shows where that check happens.

How long do I have to cancel a payday loan?

Up to the end of the second day the lender is open for business after the first advance, free and without giving a reason, under BC's Payday Loans Regulation. Written notice plus returning the money is all it takes. The e-transfer loans Victoria page explains how the window runs when funds arrive late on a Friday.

Can I roll a payday loan into a new one?

No. BC bans rollovers, so a lender cannot extend a loan for a fee or write a new loan to pay out the old one. If the due date looks unworkable, call the lender before it arrives; a lender that offers a rollover anyway belongs on the complaints page.

What does an installment loan cost?

18% to 35% APR depending on your file, never above the federal 35% ceiling. At 30% APR, $5000 over 36 months runs about $212 a month and roughly $2650 in interest. The personal loans Victoria page carries payment tables at each term.

Applying and funding

How do I apply from Greater Victoria?

Online, in about five minutes: a short form, a read only bank connection that shows the lender your pay deposits, then an e-signed agreement stating the cost in dollars. You need to be 19, BC's age of majority, with employment income landing in a Canadian chequing account. The how it works page lists what to have ready.

Can I finish the application on the bus or the ferry?

Yes. The 95 RapidBus ride from Langford to downtown is longer than the form, and a Swartz Bay sailing is longer still. Keep your online banking login handy for the verification step; the e-transfer loans Victoria page covers what happens after you press send.

Will money arrive on an evening or a weekend?

Often. Lenders send Interac e-transfers by system rather than by office hours, so a weekday evening approval usually funds the same night, while a Saturday night application often waits until Monday morning. The e-transfer loans Victoria page maps the cutoffs.

I live in Sooke, Sidney or Mill Bay. Do the terms change?

No. One BC licence regime covers every address in the province, so the end of Highway 14 borrows on the same $14 per $100 and the same cancellation right as downtown Victoria. The areas we serve hub has a page for each community.

Bad credit and approval

Can I get a loan in Victoria with bad credit?

Often, because payday lenders read the employment deposits in your account before any score, and installment lenders price a rough file rather than refuse it outright, usually near the 35% end. No approval is ever certain. The bad credit loans Victoria page sets out honest odds.

My hotel hours drop after the cruise season. How does a lender read my pay?

It sizes the offer to your regular base deposits and treats the summer peaks as exceptions, so the ceiling follows the ordinary cheque. The November to February trough shows up the same way, as a dip against a steady pattern. The bad credit loans Victoria page covers uneven histories.

I am paid by the term at UVic. Can I borrow over the summer?

Only if pay is still landing in your account, because lenders read deposits, not enrolment. A research or teaching contract that runs through August supports a small offer; the unpaid months after April do not. The Gordon Head page deals with the campus calendar directly.

My trades work stalls in the winter rain. Payday or installment?

A payday loan only fits a gap one paycheque will close, so a two or three week stall between pours usually points at the installment side, sized to the deposits from the months around it. The installment loans Victoria page works the costs over 3 to 60 months.

Repaying and problems

What happens if I cannot repay on my payday?

Call the lender before the debit bounces, because the bank's returned payment fee often costs more than anything else in the episode. BC bans rollovers and writes no extended payment plan into its law, so the earlier the call, the more room there is to arrange something. The payday loans Victoria page lists the options in order.

How do I confirm a lender is licensed, and where do I complain?

Every payday lender serving BC, online lenders included, must hold a licence you can confirm with Consumer Protection BC; a licence is not an endorsement. The same office takes the complaint when a rule is broken. The complaints page says what to gather first.

How Loans Victoria makes money: loansvictoria.ca is a free loan connection service, not a lender. When you apply, we match your application with licensed Canadian lenders and earn a referral fee from the lender if your loan funds. This never changes your rate or costs you anything. We do not make credit decisions and never charge borrowers. The lender sets and discloses the cost before you sign; payday fees are capped by provincial law and installment loans run 18% to 35% APR. All lending is subject to lender approval and provincial rules.
